Phuket has the largest choice of private pool villas in the country, spread along a west coast of very different beaches: quiet Mai Khao and Layan in the north, the villa neighbourhoods of Bang Tao and Surin, lively Patong, family-friendly Karon and Kata, and the long-stay south around Nai Harn, Rawai and Chalong.
Beyond Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand have their dry season when the Andaman coast is green; Krabi shares Phuket's rhythm; Pattaya and Hua Hin are easy drives from Bangkok; and Bangkok and Chiang Mai are city bases for monthly living.
For a classic beach holiday, choose a Phuket west-coast beach between November and April, or Koh Samui from January to August.
For a month or more, Nai Harn, Rawai, Chalong and Bang Tao on Phuket, plus Koh Phangan, Pattaya, Bangkok and Chiang Mai, are the usual choices.
